Overview
The 107th Indiana Infantry Battalion (Minute Men) was a short-term Union infantry battalion organized in Indiana during July 1863. It was formed in response to the emergency created by Confederate cavalry under General John Hunt Morgan, who crossed into Indiana as part of Morgan’s Raid. The battalion was composed of Indiana citizens who volunteered for immediate service to defend the state. The 107th Indiana Infantry Battalion served only briefly and did not leave the state, as its formation was specifically for local defense during the emergency.
This unit is distinct from other Indiana regiments organized for longer terms of service.
Organization & Service
On July 8, 1863, news reached Indianapolis that approximately 6,000 Confederate cavalry under General Morgan had crossed the Ohio River near Mauckport and were advancing toward Corydon, Indiana. In response, the governor issued a call for volunteers to defend the state. Within 48 hours, over 65,000 men offered their services. From these volunteers, regiments numbered 102 to 114, along with one battalion, were organized for emergency service. The battalion was designated as the 107th Indiana Infantry Battalion.
The 107th Indiana Infantry Battalion was mustered into service in July 1863. Its members were primarily assigned to local defense duties, including guarding key points and supporting the mobilization against Morgan’s forces. The battalion did not engage in combat, as Morgan’s Raid moved rapidly through southern Indiana and exited the state within a few days. Once the immediate threat had passed, the battalion was mustered out, having served only during the emergency period in July 1863.
